I forgot something. Am I suffering from dementia? An expert weighing
Question: I began to forget normal words during daily conversations, and I was only 55 years old. Did I lose it? Or is this normal? My children think I suffer from dementia. They might be kidding, but I secretly worry. Should I?
This question reflects a very common concern. Many of us reach middle age and begin to see change. Our joints are sick, our energy level is dive, and we pay attention when we leave our credit card at home or forget the name of a friend’s cat. To some extent, we realize that aging will occur. But we don’t always know what’s normal and tears vs. Signs of serious illness.
So, we ask questions: Is this forgetfulness is a sign of aging or the beginning of dementia?
Our geriatric expert, Laurie Archbald-Pannone, MD, breaks down what is normal and what is not.
Normal: not a sign of dementia
You may feel the loss, but many factors – health, sleep, stress – can affect your memory.
Forgetting something
Can’t find the right word for something? Bring the boiler? Wearing a lightweight sweater on a cold night? You may feel ashamed, but this is all examples of memory changes with the aging we expect. As we get older, this can take longer to “memory remember” us to enter. It is hoped that on one occasion we forget the name of the acquaintance. Or if you talk to a friend about a famous singer but the name is not sliding from your tongue.
Lost something
Even wrongly placing glasses or keys to your car regularly does not mean you are on the road to dementia. Brain fog that slows you or makes multitasking difficult – this can happen for many reasons – which are mostly not dementia.
Abnormal: signs of early dementia
These are signs that can be associated with dementia and you want to be checked by a health care provider.
Confusion in a known place
If you really feel confused, confused, and lost in a familiar arrangement, such as your workplace or living room, it can be a sign of something serious.
Forget the general term
There is a difference between the types of forgetfulness. If you forget the name of a neighbor’s dog, it’s different from not knowing the word “dog.” Talk to your provider if you, or someone who is close to you, can no longer recognize numbers or make simple additions.
Yes, you can prevent dementia
The following guide to keep your brain healthy.
Memory falls at this time
Forgot to serve the food you just prepared can be a sign of change outside what we expect with aging. Although the wrong placement of items can be in changes in normal aging, loss of your ability to trace your steps may indicate that you should see your doctor.
Mood change
Suddenly, big changes in mood or personality or new to the activities that we previously enjoyed could also be a sign of dementia. But this can also be a sign of depression or delirium, so this must be a symptom that you should discuss with the provider.
