How to be a reader as an adult

Nearly a decade ago, I launched my free course, raising readers, about raising your children into readers.

But recently I received this message about how to become a reader as mature:

I can’t tell you how many people say something similar in the DMS section or my comments for years.

You want to be a reader. But really reading? Follow-up? That’s the part that is felt out of reach.

The good news: Being a reader is not about having magical natural abilities. This is not about speed or can sit still for an hour or read all classics. This is about building habits that suit your life. And fortunate for you, I ask for the best advice to their reading community – and they are delivered!

I share the best tips about how True adults With a full life and a complete schedule has become a reader:

Become a readerBecome a reader

1. Starting from the small one

“Start from small. This is a muscle that requires regular exercise before it feels ‘easy.’ You don’t practice for a marathon in one day.

You don’t need to dive to 500 pages last night. You just need beginning. Try sprint reading 10 minutes in the morning, or one chapter before going to bed. A reader put it perfectly:

“Two chapters a day and before you realize it, you are finishing a book and a reader!”

This is about consistency, not quantity. Each page is calculated – even if it’s only 1!

2. Audio Books Possible Tickets

If you ever said, “I just don’t have time to sit and read,” I have one word for you: Audio Book. I know there are many people out there who claim that audio books are not real books and do not count. . . I am here to tell you, they don’t have a voice in what is actually calculated. That’s a book. They count. And for many adults, they are that Finally break the code into a reader.

“I was the same until I found an audio book. This is just a format that works better for my brain.”
“Try the audio book to enter the story in the first series and then read the others.”

And my favorite thing about audio books? They are the perfect reading choice for busy adults! Listen in the car. When you fold the laundry. On your path. During your trip. You have done that -hal – maybe also pair it with a story.

If you want to dive into an audio book, I have a list of my favorite full audio book (which is very interesting!) And a favorite list of audio books from the reading community everyday.

3. Find your format (kindle, audio, physical – whatever works)

“Kindle. I brought it all the time, suitable in my hands, not having to turn on at night, can replace the book to match the mood.

Physical books are beautiful, but if the format does not work for your life, replace. The ebook on your cellphone means you can read in the school pickup path or during lunch break. Audio books can fill a calm gap on your day. Kindle makes it easy to carry thousands Books in your bag and read anywhere – even in darkness.

There is no better format than others. The best format is you will Actually use.

4. Make reading according to your day – not the other way around

“Determine the reading time on your day and don’t do other things … Before going to bed, pickup paths, etc.”
“With my hobby, I have to prioritize them and spend time for them or not happen.”

Create a small anchor of your day where you read naturally suitable. Then protect the bags like that like that sacred. Because they.

“Start with your online library. Instead of scrolling Instagram, turn the book on your cellphone. Or listen to a book when you do a boring assignment.”

You may not need more time – you might only need to exchange a few minutes of scrolling for a few minutes of reading. Try changing your morning phone habits with several pages, or scrolls your Instagram at night with one chapter.

5. Read what interests you (not what you think you “have to” read)

“Start with fun books that interest you! Who cares if they are ‘adults’ or fiction vs. nonfiction.”

“Maybe choose a book about the hobby that you want to learn, a self -help book in the field that you need to help, or a book about celebrities or biography in history that interests you.”

This is big. If you have tried to read by forcing the way through serious literary novels that everyone recommended … you might be bored. And it’s okay!

Reading should be fun. It should feel like an escape, or adventure, or gossip session with friends. You are allowed to love thriller, fantasy, memoir, spicy romance, or all of the above.

Follow your curiosity. Want to garden? Read about that. Like a true crime? Find an interesting mystery. Fascinated by celebrity life? Take the memoir.

After you find correct bookYou might not need to force yourself to read – it will be something you crave.

If you are really struggling to find a book to start, I have all blog posts about books to read if you are reading back (this is my absolute favorite of all types of genres – there is something there for everyone!).

6. Let the series associate you

“Audio book? Book?

Sometimes the hardest part has just begun. The series can help eliminate “what should I read next?” problem. If Book One reaches you, the momentum takes you forward.

Bonus: Series are often faster, easier to follow, and really worthy of parties. Like Netflix, but for your brain.

7. Anyone can be a reader

This is a great truth: If you want to be a reader, you are one.

It doesn’t matter if you finish one book this year or 120. You don’t need to post reviews, have an angle of reading, or drink tea in an aesthetic book mug (but if you do it, I like that for you).

Is there another tip to be a reader as an adult? I want you to share your best tips in the comments!
