16 tips for starting a book club for children

  • “Let them run it but be there to support.” I like this suggestion – if they have ownership of their own children’s book clubs, it is likely to have more momentum than if you drive everything. Will there be a hiccup? Almost certain, but that makes the best learning experience!
  • “My daughter’s book club meets every week and talks about this chapter or more that they read and they also read a chapter together.” What a great reminder that there are a million ways to run a children’s book club! You can do this every month or two weeks or every week, and you can decide how many books you read and don’t have to look like an adult book club!
  • “We did it during the summer with children in the book group!” This is a good way to start a children’s book club if you already have a group of mothers who like to read and order clubs!
  • “Every child chooses a book and then they host their book month with treats and activities related to books.” Using a book choice is an extraordinary way to get the purchase of every child who participates and also does not make it overwhelmed for one child or family.
  • “Mother’s email, meeting with children to plan, make a schedule and do it! Very fun and commensurate.” I like to have children involved in the initial meeting to help them feel buying to the book club!
  • “My children are in a children’s book club. They make bookmarks at every meeting to remember the books they read.” Geez, I like this idea!
  • “Everyone at the club listens to the first chapter in the audio book together.” You know I like this suggestion – a good way to help everyone make a complicated jump to the beginning of a new book and get momentum before they even leave a meeting!
  • “Every child carries the book they are reading and shared/answered questions.” This is an extraordinary way to let children read what they want rather than feeling depressed to read something that might not succeed for them and help children interested in trying other books! Recipes for Lifetime Book Lovers!
  • “10yo I run a weekly zoom call with the theme of the party directly once a month around the book at the end.” Whoa, I like this suggestion. (And how great the child runs it!).
  • “Read the book that has been converted into a film and then compare it!” This is the perfect summer theme for children’s book clubs. I have the entire list of children’s books that have a film version here!
  • “I grew up at a mother-children’s book club. The best thing ever. Girls chose books.” This is a very popular suggestion (along with the Book Club of Parents/Children). This is an extraordinary way to spend time together and connect through books!
  • “I did one in my school for our 2-4 grade students. I chose the title, giving children about a month to read and then we have a lot of lunch and discuss.” Steal this librarian idea and the host of a monthly book club lunch where everyone can chat about this book!
  • “Do a book club with your children. You and your children read the same book and discuss. Very fun!” This is very good if you don’t want to manage other people’s schedules or don’t have children or other families to be easily invited to join!
  • “Add food that matches the book to the meeting.” Everyone knows that food is the best part of the book club! And that applies to children’s book clubs like mature!
  • “No more than half an hour, pre -plan and give questions, have snacks, no more than 8 children.” It is very helpful to decide from the beginning what your limits around the Book Club, whether it is the number of members of the book club, book length, length of meeting, etc. Then everyone knows what is expected!
  • “Read the book at the lowest reading level in the group.” This is a good advice if you have readers at various levels and ages.

Are there any other suggestions or tips to host the children’s book clubs? I want to hear!
