Employees are “career pads” now – this is why it is important

Let’s discuss one of the topics that most anxiety today: unsafe work. It’s no secret that work looks much different today than in years ago, and it continues to change from day to day. Between labor trends such as “shrinking,” economic uncertainty, the revival of artificial intelligence (AI), and a number of other factors, no wonder many of us feel the increasing sense of instability and uncertainty in our career. It is true what they say: the only constant is change, so know how to adapt and prepare ourselves for any situation in our career path is the best we can do. Enter a strategy that can help you do that: career pads. In front, I tear down what career bearings are, why it is important, and some ways to please you can practice so you are always ready for what next.

What is a career pad?

“Career pads” is the term labor used to describe the practice of creating professional and financial safety nets. This is done through increased betrayal, stay alert for employment opportunities, and expand your professional network, everything while still being employed. Career bearings include activities such as:

  • Update your LinkedIn resume and profile regularly, so you are always ready to apply for new opportunities without time lag.
  • Involved in a deliberate network through coffee chat, meetings, and more.
  • Pursue new skills or certification after hours.
  • Exploring freelance or side projects for additional income and business development potential at the end of the road.
  • Oversee the open role – even if you like your job!

The main thing is? Well, if you lose your job unexpectedly, you can “make up for a punch” by having additional opportunities set to prevent career setbacks or long -term unemployment. If you suddenly lose your job (or things that look shaky), the steps you take functions as a soft landing.

Having a backup plan for your job is not a new idea. The concept of “career pads” preceded the term itself, which began circulating on the internet in 2022 and 2023. Career bearings are always important, but can hardly be negotiated today given the pace of change that hit the workforce.

Why career pads are so important in the current job market

For many people, job security feels like luxury in the world today. The idea behind the “career pads” jumped after Pandemi, and unfortunately, the changes in all types continued since then. Even a stable role can change in an instant.

Not to mention layoffs are no longer limited to struggle businesses. Layoffs in the US reached the highest level since the early months of Pandemic in July 2025, encouraging the total number of layoffs for this year to be more than 800,000, according to Newsweek. Reasons to cut the team varies from organization to organization. Technological changes, costs of cutting costs, company restructuring, and lack of funds are some of the cited causes, but regardless of the reason, companies in all industries and sectors feel their effects.

Apart from layoffs, job dissatisfaction and fatigue at work remains a widespread problem for employees. And while fatigue can be temporary or can be improved through honest conversations with your boss, sometimes changing companies or work lines at all is your next best step (and career pads can help with it).

“Career bearings are a strategic strength step for those who want to remain in front, confidence, and in control, whatever is brought by the work market.”

Beyond clear financial protection, it also gives you peace of mind. Career bearings are a strategic strength step for those who want to stay in front, confidence, and in control, whatever is brought by the work market.

How to apply career pads

Indeed, doing this “extra” activity can feel like adding more to your full plate. But career pads do not have to feel like extra work. You can apply career pads in a creative and fun way. Here are some ideas:

Prepare the night of monthly expertise payment with your friends

One of the easiest ways to improve (and have fun doing it) is to learn from people around you (especially what you have spent together). Try to schedule the night of monthly expertise and hangout sesh with your friends. Maybe one of your friends is an expert in project management, and the other knows the ins and outs of social media marketing. Ask every friend to take “hot chairs” for one night and teach the remaining basic group skills. And you don’t need to focus only on your work skills. If your friend is a hobby expert or knowledgeable about the topic or area that you are interested in, ask them!

Teaching and trading skills with your friends are free, strengthen your connections, and expand your skills. Bonus points if you can squeeze dinner or drinks afterwards for a round night studying and catching up.

Build a low -risk side project

While career pads are a continuous process, there are many small actions that you can take that does not require a significant time. For example, you can launch small blogs, podcasts, or creative projects around your field of expertise or desires. Or you can sell vintage findings online. You can start a low -risk side project for one or two coffee shops, which means what you need is an idea and a few hours to make progress.

Low-risk side projects are a good way to show initiatives, increase your visibility, and give you full autonomy for output (something that we sometimes lack in our daily work). You can add your side project to your resume, and depend on where you take it, it can even open the door for loose opportunities, guest podcast appearance, social media features, and more. It also diversifying your experience outside of special fields.

Host or schedule night “resume and rosé”

Okay, you don’t need to drink Rosé (but it’s fun, right?). On the night of “resume and rosé”, sit, turn on your favorite candles, take your favorite drinks, and update your resume. (Bonus Points If you also review and update your LinkedIn profile!) Schedule it as if this is a date with yourself and makes it as comfortable as possible -because sometimes we all know these tasks do not all Fun that. You can even schedule tonight with your friends or partners for some default accountability and add resume feedback.

Committed to learning opportunities the size of a bite

Leveling does not always mean returning to school to get a degree. Instead, you can include smaller learning practices into your daily routine and take some new skills through tutorials and training programs. To make this as easy and easy to approach, try to replace a Netflix episode with a YouTube tutorial or LinkedIn Learning Video twice per week. Or dedicated “Electric Clock” Saturday morning once a month to mini-court and pamper yourself afterwards. This small exchange increases from time to time and produces large results. Before you realize it, you will feel confident and meet the requirements to handle something completely new.

So, should you start a career bearing?

No one knows what the work market is in three, five, or even 10 years. That is why it is very important to remain proactive. Career bearings – take small and regular steps to prepare for unexpected changes – can help anyone, in any industry, feel ready for the future. Outside of planning, it builds confidence, letting you stop emphasizing ‘what if’ and believe that you can handle whatever happens next. And because you can do it in a fun and interesting way, even with friends, really no loss!
